Heating Matters / Change Flux
Online Video Screening & Writing Workshop by MELT (Ren Loren Britton & Iz Paehr)

Heating Matters/Change Flux is a video work that unlocks metaphors of melting in times of climate crisis and explores unstable states of matter. Colliding theories and practices from chemistry, trans*feminism and computation, this dictionary-like assemblage is invested in moments of material transformation. We take things not seriously, but literally when we turn up the heat and film, perform and learn about how they melt. Warming up and melt down corrosive colonial relations (whiteness), climate change realities (melting ice caps) and computational practices (overclocking and burning hoverboards); we investigate the textures, dimensions and representations of stability and what melting as a practice has to offer. This video work will be available online from 22 March till 5 April 2021. Engaging this work we will host a writing workshop dealing with material transformations on Tuesday 30 March from 18:00 – 19:30 CET, open to everyone.
Join us to undo stabilities and play with languages of the unstable.

As MELT, Ren Loren Britton and Iz Paehr are arts-design researchers who work with play, technology and radical pedagogy. Tuning to the material-discursive conditions of tech infrastructures, they trouble patterns of agency in socio-technological systems with the methods of queer play, unlearning and leaking. Their work crumbles structures, unbounds materials, dissolves technology and makes collectivities. MELT turns up the heat, and reads Denise Ferreira da Silva to understand how heat links climate change to colonialism, and from there they un-discipline knowledges from trans*feminism, computation and chemistry. MELT is exploring the limits of classification, stability and of practicing (re)flow(ing). MELT has been shaped by (melting) Ice, Freezers, Software, Disability Justice, Trans*feminism, Signal, moving at trans*- crip- kinship- time, Black Feminisms, Materialisms, Post/De- Colonial thinking, Gifs, Climate Protests, Anti-Racism and Dancing. www.meltionary.com
