Feminist Housing (Her)Stories for the Future. Berlin, Bauhaus and Beyond

Part II: A Feminist Perspective for Berlin Today! What Could a Non-Sexist City Look Like?*

The series Feminist Housing (Her)Stories for the Future. BERLIN, BAUHAUS and BEYOND deals with feminist approaches, discussions and practices in architecture, as well as spatial and urban planning, in which gender relations become visible as diverse asymmetrical ideas of living, relationships and professional life. Starting from the pioneers of architecture in the 1920s (focus of the first part in autumn 2019), the second part will discuss the impacts of the second women’s movement on architecture, living, housing and activism to the present in a contradictory globalized economy, presenting feminist and inclusive alternatives for the future.

A Feminist Perspective for Berlin Today! What Could a Non-Sexist City Look Like?

22.8.-19.9.2020 // Wed.-Sat. // 16:00-19:00

Opening: 21.8.2020 // 18:00
& DJ T-INA Darling

With contributions from Sarah Held, Elke Krasny & Sophie Lingg & Claudia Lomoschitz, Dorothea Nold, Banu Çiçek Tülü, Lena Wegmann and Ina Wudtke, the exhibition is dedicated to urban and spatial concepts from a feminist perspective in installations, photographs, sound and text works. The works address current urban and social imbalances and develop feminist visions of urban politics for a future free of discrimination. By means of mapping, the works are situated in the urban environment of Berlin in collaboration with the Chair for Urban Design and Urbanization at TU Berlin’s Institute for Architecture.

On the evening of the opening, DJ T-INA Darling aka Ina Wudtke presents a conceptual DJ Set with protest songs against rising rents and displacement.

The current distance and hygiene measures are guaranteed and adjusted in accordance with the guidelines. The DJ set and bar will take place outside. Access to the exhibition will be regularly restricted to a limited number of visitors and only with a mouth-nose cover.

Mapping- and Research Seminar

17.8.-20.8.2020 // Kick-Off: 17.8.2020 // 10:00

by Julia Köpper, Dagmar Pelger and Martha Wegewitz (Chair for Urban Design and Urbanisation CUD am Institut für Architektur der Technischen Universität Berlin)

What does the feminist appropriation of (urban)space mean for a critical planning practice? Which roles do women play in architecture, planning, and urban policy? Students grapple with the exhibited artistic positions on feminist spaces, practices, and visions in architecture and social planning in the exhibition “A feminist perspective for Berlin today! What could a non-sexist city look like?” A cartographic spatial installation is created by means of spatial analysis and artistic and social research methods that situate the positions in Berlin’s urban space.

FEMINIST NIGHT SCAPES

A Manifest for the night. Collective Nightwalk with Elke Krasny, Sophie Lingg, Claudia Lomoschitz

Friday- to Saturday night 22.8.2020 // 0:00-2:00

FLINT groups parade through the night in a feminist city. They discover places, sing, perform scores, stroll, drink on the corner, and support one another. The feminist city makes it possible for all bodies and genders to move freely. How can this be tested in the actual city?

meeting point: Aral Tankstelle, Vor dem Schlesischen Tor, 10997 Berlin.

How can we collectively experience feminist spatial practices despite physical distance?
City Walk, moderated by fem_arc

19.9.2020 // 14:00-16:00

In a walk guided by binaural sound recordings, listeners* are enabled to experience emancipatory practices and spaces together with different narrative characters. Narrative figure O tells of an experience in Hong Kong, where a group of domestic servants have a large picnic every Sunday in the middle of the mall, appropriating the public ground between expensive boutiques. Narrative figure K tells of the performative self-experiment as a woman standing alone on the sidewalk for 45 minutes, seemingly without any task. The narrated spaces and situations resonate in the experienced space. Could this also happen here and now and what would that be like?

meeting point: in front of alpha nova & galerie futura

Feminist Housing (Her)stories for the future. BERLIN, BAUHAUS and BEYOND was initiated and conceived by Felicita Reuschling and developed in curatorial collaboration with Katharina Koch and Sylvia Sadzinski (alpha nova & galerie futura). The second part takes place in cooperation with Julia Köpper, Dagmar Pelger und Martha Wegewitz (Chair for Urban Design and Urbanisation CUD am Institut für Architektur der Technische Universität Berlin) and Helle Panke e.V.. Felicita Reuschling passed away in June 2019. The series, of which she was the decisive inspiration for ideas and themes, will be realized and continued in her spirit and in memory of her as a friend, colleague and ingenious feminist thinker and practitioner.
