Photography – Text – Book Presentation
The artistic work double blind by Marion Denis is an examination of the origin of knowledge in the biological-medical field. A close look is taken at the scientific processes that deals with chromosomal gender. What is most interesting here is the production of scientific data and the efficacy of standardization. With what methods should biological gender be recognized and determined? How do researchers perceive – and with what tools? How do they produce their images? double blind consists of black and white photographs, which were taken by the laboratory director of a human genetic laboratory after being asked to photocopy important things for her work. There are additionally color photographs, taken by the artist, which follow the preparation of a karyotype in the laboratory. A further aspect of the work is a conversation between Marion Denis and the lead biologist about the search for knowledge and laboratory experience. The artistic and scientific perspective can be found in images and conversation.
The project and publication have been funded by Kunststiftung NRW.
