Vokale Performancekunst als feministische Praxis. Meredith Monk und das künstlerische Kräftefeld Downtown New York von 1964 bis 1979

Die vokale Performancekunst ist zuvor als eine in den USA der 1970er Jahre von Frauen initiierte, neue Kunstform definiert worden. Über diese Tatsache der herausragenden Rolle von Frauen als Akteurinnen hinausgehend ist jedoch die Frage, worin die Gründe für diesen Umstand gelegen haben, und inwiefern die vokale Performancekunst selbst als feministische Praxis verstanden werden kann. Dieser Frage folgend und die Akteur_innen sowie die Kriterien der vokalen Performancekunst in den Blick nehmend rückt ein weiterer, bislang unbenannter wichtiger Kontext für die junge Kunstform ins Gesichtsfeld: Der Raum Downtown New York. Das sich ab den 1960er Jahren neu herausbildende künstlerische Kräftefeld Downtown hatte eine ausschlaggebende Bedeutung für die Entstehung der jungen Kunstform. Meredith Monk, die als wichtige Pionierin der vokalen Performancekunst und der so genannten erweiterten Stimmtechniken gilt, ist zugleich als eine zentrale Figur des künstlerischen Kräftefelds Downtown zu verstehen. Anhand ihrer Arbeiten können paradigmatisch für die frühe vokale Performancekunst deren Kriterien als feministische Praxis und als Downtown-Praxis vorgestellt werden.
Marie-Anne Kohl ist promovierte Musikwissenschaftlerin mit einem kulturwissenschaftlichen, postkolonialen und feministischen Schwerpunkt. Derzeit ist sie als Postdoc wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Forschungsinstitut für Musiktheater an der Universität Bayreuth. Zuvor hatte sie von 2012-2015 gemeinsam mit Katharina Koch die Künstlerische Leitung der alpha nova kulturwerkstatt & galerie futura inne.

Muyassar Kurdi
In various artistic constellations, the performance artist and musician Muyassar Kurdi probes the critical potential of the voice regarding phallogocentric structures of representation. Her experimental performances aim at a speechless but by no means silent communication with the audience. Through the immateriality of the voice Kurdi attains the materiality of the body. Muyassar Kurdi’s performative practice consists of sound and movement improvisation. The conceptual openness allows, often unnoticed, the leaking of critical thoughts. Kurdi’s newest creation is an assemblage of home-made electronic instruments, sculpture, voice and dance.
Muyassar Kurdi is a Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary artist. Her work encompasses sound, extended vocal technique, performance art, movement, photography, and film. She has toured extensively in the U.S. and throughout Europe, including the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and the UK in both England and Scotland. Kurdi studied voice and dance with legendary vocalist, dancer and recording artist Meredith Monk via The House Foundation, as well as learning the Japanese dance tradition of Butoh with Tadashi Endo, director of the Butoh Center MAMU. She also explored Butoh with Mexican master of the form Diego Piñon among others throughout Chicago, NYC, Berlin, and Vienna. She currently studies with Juilliard faculty member Janis Brenner, also a member of the Meredith Monk Vocal Ensemble.
